ASUU Begins Mobilizing Members for Nationwide Strike Over Unmet Demands
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced mobilization of its members across all public universities in Nigeria ahead of a planned nationwide strike.
According to a letter dated October 5, 2025, signed by ASUU President Prof. Christopher Piwuna, the union regretted that despite serving a 14-day ultimatum to the government (starting September 28, 2025), there has been no meaningful response.
ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) had met on September 29, 2025 and resolved that if the government fails to meet the demands within the ultimatum, the union would initiate a two-week warning strike, subsequently escalating to an indefinite strike if necessary.
The union has instructed members to take directives only from their branch chairpersons, zonal coordinators, and attend congress meetings for updates.
ASUU cited the government’s silence, delay, and inaction in addressing a renegotiated agreement (transmitted since February 2025) and other longstanding demands as key reasons forcing its hand.
If the strike proceeds as planned, it could disrupt academic activities across Nigeria’s public universities.
