Truck Plunges Off Agege Bridge, Lands Amid Crowd at Agege Bus Stop

Panic and chaos erupted yesterday afternoon at Agege Bus Stop as a heavy-duty truck lost control while navigating a sharp corner on the Agege Bridge, ultimately plunging off the bridge and crashing into the bustling crowd beneath.

Eyewitnesses described the horrifying moment when the truck, which appeared to be heavily loaded, struggled to maintain its balance while negotiating a tight bend atop the bridge. Without warning, the truck veered off course, broke through the side rails, and came crashing down onto the busy area under the bridge where traders, commuters, and passersby were gathered.

"I just thank God for my life," one witness exclaimed. "I was right there when it happened. If I had moved a step forward, the truck would have landed on me!"

According to multiple accounts, the bridge was wet due to earlier rainfall, which might have contributed to the truck’s difficulty in handling the sharp turn. Others at the scene speculated that brake failure could also have been a factor, given how fast the truck appeared to be moving moments before the crash.

Miraculously, despite the frightening nature of the incident and the dense crowd at the bus stop, initial reports suggest there were no fatalities. Several people, however, sustained injuries ranging from minor bruises to fractures and were quickly attended to by emergency responders. Some victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, while others received first aid treatment at the scene.

Officers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), alongside members of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), swiftly arrived at the location to cordon off the area, redirect traffic, and commence rescue and clearing operations. The mangled remains of the truck were later seen being lifted by a crane.

Authorities have urged drivers, especially those handling heavy-duty vehicles, to exercise greater caution when driving on elevated or curved structures, particularly under wet conditions. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident and whether any mechanical failure or negligence was involved.

The Agege Bridge remains a critical artery in Lagos' transportation network, linking several densely populated areas. The accident sparked renewed calls from residents for better safety measures on bridges and highways, including stronger railings and clearer speed limit signage.

Meanwhile, grateful survivors like the eyewitness who spoke to our correspondent are counting their blessings. "Today could have ended differently," he said, visibly shaken. "I can't explain how I escaped, but I know God saved me."
