United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) has signed a major aircraft acquisition agreement with U.S.-based Southwest Airlines for the purchase of six Boeing 737-800 aircraft, marking a significant milestone in the Nigerian carrier’s fleet expansion strategy. The deal, sealed at Southwest’s corporate headquarters in Dallas, also provides an option for four additional aircraft, potentially bringing the total to ten jets to be delivered between Q1 2026 and Q1 2027.

The acquisition is being facilitated in collaboration with SkyWorks Holdings, LLC, a leading aviation services firm specializing in aircraft lease origination and fleet management.

The Boeing 737-800 is globally recognized for its fuel efficiency, reliability, and passenger comfort. With a range of 2,935 nautical miles, the aircraft is suitable for both short- and medium-haul routes, making it ideal for UNA’s domestic, regional, and future international operations. The aircraft can seat up to 189 passengers, featuring wider seats, larger overhead bins, and enhanced cabin lighting designed to improve travel comfort.

According to UNA, the new jets will not only boost its operational capacity but also reduce costs and environmental footprint through better aerodynamics and engine performance.

The fleet expansion is expected to strengthen United Nigeria Airlines’ route network, enabling the carrier to serve more destinations across Africa and beyond. The project is also projected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, reinforcing Nigeria’s aviation sector as a driver of economic growth under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

“This agreement marks a bold step in our mission to expand connectivity, improve passenger experience, and position United Nigeria as a major player in African aviation,” the airline said in a statement.

As part of the deal, Southwest Airlines will provide technical support, maintenance services, and crew training, ensuring a smooth integration of the new aircraft into UNA’s operations.

Boeing’s Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa, Anbessie Yitbarek, welcomed UNA to the Boeing 737 family, describing the aircraft as a “workhorse” that offers superior performance and returns. Meanwhile, Anders Hebrand of SkyWorks Holdings emphasized the effectiveness of deploying these jets into Africa’s fast-growing aviation market.

The acquisition signals UNA’s determination to become one of West Africa’s leading carriers, with the Boeing 737-800 forming the backbone of its future fleet. The airline says it is committed to delivering safe, reliable, and world-class service as it scales up operations.
