Nepal Protests: 19 Dead, 500 Injured After Social Media Ban Sparks Violence — Videos

Protesters set fire to buildings in Kathmandu amid Nepal social media ban unrest.
At least 19 people have been killed and more than 500 injured in violent clashes around Nepal’s Federal Parliament and other parts of Kathmandu as of Wednesday.

The unrest broke out after the government attempted to ban 26 social media platforms including Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, and X, over failure to meet a registration deadline. Although authorities later revoked the ban, protests escalated, fueled by widespread anger over alleged corruption.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli announced his resignation, saying he was stepping down to pave the way for “a political solution and resolution of the problems.”

Demonstrators have since intensified their attacks, targeting government officials and setting fire to homes and public buildings. In response, the Nepali Army has taken over security operations, deploying helicopters to conduct rescue missions.

Kathmandu’s international airport, which had been shut down for 24 hours amid the chaos, has now reopened as authorities work to restore order.
