Afriland Towers Fire: United Capital Confirms 6 Staff Dead, Toll Hits 10

Firefighters and rescue teams at Afriland Towers after deadly Lagos fire outbreak
At least six more people have been confirmed dead after the fire that engulfed Afriland Towers, a six-storey office complex on Broad Street, Lagos Island, Lagos State.

The latest casualties were staff of United Capital, a financial and investment services company occupying the third and fourth floors of the high-rise.

This update follows an earlier announcement by the Federal Inland Revenue Service, which revealed that four of its employees also died in the blaze on Wednesday evening.

Eyewitnesses said some occupants tried to escape through windows as emergency crews worked tirelessly to bring the flames under control. Teams from the Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other agencies managed to rescue at least nine people. Five were successfully revived, while four remained unconscious.

“Altogether, nine people have been rescued. Five have regained consciousness, while others escaped without injury. Efforts are ongoing to stabilize the remaining four,” the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service noted in a Tuesday statement, expressing concern that the casualty figure could rise.

In a statement released Thursday morning, United Capital confirmed that six of its staff members died in the tragedy. With this disclosure, the official death toll from the Afriland Towers fire now stands at 10.
