UNIZIK Bans Final-Year “Signing Out” Ceremonies Over Violence Concerns
The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK), has announced an indefinite ban on final-year students holding “signing out” ceremonies after examinations.
In a statement signed by the Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Okeke, and released on Tuesday, August 20, the university explained that the decision was taken due to repeated incidents of chaos, violence, and disruption of academic activities linked to such events.
The statement reads in part:
“The university management wishes to inform you that, effective immediately, all forms of orchestration (‘signing off’) related to final examinations by final-year students are completely and indefinitely banned from the university premises. This decision responds to recurring incidents of chaos, violence, and disruption associated with these events.”
The registrar further warned that any student found participating in such activities would face severe disciplinary measures, including possible rustication. Outsiders entering the campus to take part in the events also risk arrest and prosecution for disorderly conduct and breach of peace.
Dr. Okeke reassured the university community that the management is committed to maintaining a safe and secure academic environment and urged students to remain focused on their studies.
“We urge all students to focus on their academic responsibilities and report any instances of misconduct or threats to safety to the appropriate authorities,” the statement added.
