Police Explain to Protesters Why Sowore Is Still Detained —VIDEO

Commissioner of Police Abayomi Shogunle addressing protesters over Sowore’s detention
The Commissioner of Police for the Special Intervention Squad, Abayomi Shogunle, has explained that human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, is being detained for refusing to make a statement during police interrogation.

Sowore, who contested the 2019 presidential election under the African Action Congress (AAC), is currently in police custody following two petitions filed against him. His detention has sparked nationwide reactions, with many demanding his immediate release.

Addressing protesters and journalists at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Friday, Shogunle said the petitions were presented to Sowore in the presence of his lawyers.

“The first petition concerns the alleged forgery of a police document, which he published online. By law, he must provide the source of that forged document. The second petition involves alleged cyberbullying,” Shogunle explained.

He noted that despite the presence of his legal team, Sowore declined to make a statement, a decision which, according to the CP, is contrary to legal procedure.

“When an allegation is made against you, Nigerian law is clear — you are expected to state your position in writing,” Shogunle added.
