Bauchi Government honours elderly citizens for humanitarian service with cash rewards totaling ₦2.6 million
The Bauchi State Government has honoured five elderly citizens with cash rewards totaling ₦2.6 million in recognition of their selfless service to their communities.
The Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Hajiya Hajara Wanka, presented the cheques on Tuesday in Bauchi during activities marking the 2025 World Humanitarian Day.
Wanka explained that the initiative was aimed at celebrating unsung heroes who have dedicated their lives to serving others without any financial reward.
“We have chosen five people, and I’m glad to say they are all deserving. Two of them were nominated through our radio programme. We presented awards of excellence and financial support to encourage them,” she said.
She highlighted the unique contributions of the honourees: Dandada Ahmadu, the Ward Head of Gwallaga, who has served his people diligently for decades, Isa Bagali, known for visiting hospitals daily to comfort and pray for patients, A community volunteer in Toro LGA, who cared for a maternity ward for 20 years without pay, Another beneficiary, who maintained a community mosque by fetching water for worshippers and assisting the needy.
According to the breakdown, Ahmadu received ₦1 million; Bagali ₦700,000; Babangida Abba ₦500,000; Idris Baba ₦250,000; and Malam Abdullahi ₦200,000.
The Commissioner urged the public to emulate the spirit of compassion and service demonstrated by the honourees, stressing that humanitarianism begins within local communities.
