Tinubu Gifts Each Super Falcons Player $100,000, National Honour, and House After WAFCON Win
During a celebratory reception held yesterday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the President also announced a $100,000 (approximately ₦153 million) cash reward and the allocation of three-bedroom apartments to each player. In addition, members of the team’s 11-man technical crew will receive $50,000 (approximately ₦75.6 million) each.
The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) had earlier pledged a ₦10 million cash gift to each player as part of a coordinated national recognition effort for the Super Falcons' outstanding performance.
Welcoming the team, Tinubu praised their resilience and dedication, stating:
“Today, you return home as champions of Africa. We could not be prouder. Your victory represents more than a sporting accomplishment—it is a triumph of courage, determination, discipline, and consistency.”
This marks Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title, a landmark achievement that solidifies the Super Falcons’ dominance in African women’s football.
In a lighter moment, the President shared his personal emotions during the tense final match:
“Honestly, I didn’t want to watch the match. I didn’t want high blood pressure,” he joked. “When it was 2-0, I became restless, but I stayed to watch your indomitable spirit. When we scored 2-1, my spirit—and I believe that of the nation—was lifted.”
He recalled how the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, anxiously followed the match, momentarily abandoning dinner preparations to cheer on the team.
Tinubu added that the team’s performance had inspired not just the country, but particularly young girls across Nigeria:
“You have shown them that their dreams are valid and achievable. You’ve reminded us all of the strength of the Nigerian spirit.”
Concluding his remarks, the President formally accepted the championship trophy on behalf of the nation and expressed heartfelt gratitude to the players and coaching staff:
“On behalf of a grateful nation, I hereby confer on the players and technical crew the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON). Thank you for your passion, thank you for your dedication, and thank you for making Nigeria proud.”
