Bayelsa Community on Edge Over Alleged Ritual Killing of Sacred Python
Tension has gripped Opu-Nembe Kingdom in Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State following allegations of ritual activity involving the secret burial of python remains within the community — a serious taboo in Nembe tradition.
The controversy escalated after a mysterious swarm of bees invaded the community square, an unusual occurrence that locals interpreted as a spiritual warning. The incident has sparked fear and confusion among residents, prompting community elders to consult traditional medicine men for clarity.
According to community sources, pythons are revered and considered sacred creatures in Nembe culture. Killing a python is strictly forbidden and is believed to attract severe traditional consequences. In instances where a python is accidentally or unlawfully killed, elaborate funeral rites must be performed to appease the spirits and restore balance. The use of python parts for any ritual, medicine, or purpose is strictly taboo.
Traditionalists, after spiritual consultations, reportedly traced the cause of the disturbance to the alleged burial of python remains within the community — a violation that many believe triggered the bee invasion as a spiritual reaction.
“The identity of those involved in the sacrilege remains unknown, but the atmosphere in Opu-Nembe is tense. Everyone is awaiting the necessary cleansing rites to restore peace and spiritual order,” a resident told Vanguard.
It was further revealed that those responsible for the taboo act have been given a six-day ultimatum to confess or face dire traditional sanctions. Elders and spiritual leaders are now mobilizing for purification rituals to prevent further unrest.
As of the time of this report, no official statement has been issued by local authorities, but the community remains on edge, fearing further supernatural repercussions if the situation is not quickly resolved.
