Ogun Tragedy: Four Schoolchildren Killed in Road Crash, Residents Protest on Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred around 3 p.m. as the children were returning home from school. A speeding Toyota Corolla with registration number KSF 579 DM reportedly lost control and plowed into the pupils walking along the roadside.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident, stating that all four victims died on the spot due to the impact of the collision.
“The pupils were immediately transported to the General Hospital, Ijaiye, for medical certification and later released to their grieving families for burial,” Akinbiyi said.
Tensions flared shortly after the accident, as enraged residents of Sowo village took to the expressway in protest, blocking traffic in both directions. Some angry youths even attempted to lynch the driver, who was eventually rescued by security operatives.
The protest, which caused significant disruption to traffic, was brought under control by a joint team of TRACE officials, the Nigerian Police Force, and the Nigerian Army.
This tragic incident has reignited concerns over road safety, particularly near schools and pedestrian zones in Ogun State. Residents are now calling on authorities to implement stricter traffic control measures and ensure safer commuting environments for children.
