EFCC Arrests 48 Suspected Internet Fraudsters in Abeokuta, Recovers Rifle and Luxury Cars
The operatives of the Ibadan Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested forty-eight (48) suspected internet fraudsters in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. The anti-graft agency confirmed the operation on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, sparking significant reactions across social media platforms.
According to the EFCC, the arrests were the result of sustained surveillance and credible intelligence that linked the suspects to various fraudulent internet activities, often referred to as “Yahoo Yahoo” in local parlance.
Items recovered during the raid include a pump-action rifle, five luxury cars—including brands such as Mercedes-Benz and Lexus—a motorbike, several high-end mobile phones, laptop computers, and numerous incriminating documents believed to be connected to online scams.
The EFCC disclosed that the suspects are currently undergoing thorough profiling and interrogation to ascertain their individual levels of involvement in the alleged cybercrimes. The agency also confirmed that once investigations are concluded, those found culpable will be charged to court in accordance with Nigerian law.
The commission reiterated its unwavering commitment to combating cybercrime and financial fraud, which have become increasingly prevalent across Nigeria. In recent years, the EFCC has intensified efforts to clamp down on internet fraudsters, carrying out similar operations in cities like Lagos, Ibadan, Benin City, and Abuja.
Public reactions to the arrests have been mixed. While many Nigerians commend the EFCC’s dedication to fighting cybercrime, some have raised concerns over due process and human rights during large-scale arrests.
The EFCC has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious online activities to help curb the growing menace of internet fraud, which not only tarnishes Nigeria’s global reputation but also affects foreign investments and national economic stability.
As investigations continue, the anti-graft agency emphasized that it remains resolute in its mission to rid Nigeria of cybercrime and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
