Anambra Shuts Down Baby Factory in Umunya | Human Trafficking, Quack Hospital Exposed
In a bold move against human trafficking and medical malpractice, the Anambra State Government has sealed an illegal baby factory disguised as a hospital in Umunya, Oyi Local Government Area.
The illegal operation, known as "Mother and Child Hospital and Maternity," was exposed following months of surveillance and intelligence gathering. Located at 1 School Road, near Tansian University, the facility was shut down during a sting operation spearheaded by the Anambra State Ministry of Health in collaboration with security agencies.
During the raid, authorities arrested five pregnant women, alongside 10 other individuals, including key staff suspected of being part of a child trafficking syndicate. The supposed hospital was discovered to be operating under a falsified license and run by a self-proclaimed doctor from Delta State.
Speaking to the press, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, confirmed the facility was not only unlicensed but deeply involved in trafficking young girls aged 15 to 21, who were allegedly held against their will and forced into pregnancies. These infants were then trafficked through illegal adoption networks.
“This crackdown is a significant victory in the ongoing battle against child trafficking, human rights violations, and gender-based abuse,” Obidike stated.
He emphasized that the raid reflects the state’s zero-tolerance stance against quack medical practices and exploitation. The commissioner also warned operators of unauthorized facilities to shut down immediately or face legal consequences.
The operation was supported by teams from the State Health Facility Accreditation and Monitoring Unit and the State Illegal and Anti-Quackery Taskforce, both instrumental in identifying and eliminating illegal medical centers across the state.
Obidike further called on the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious healthcare activities to the authorities. A full-scale investigation is now underway, with suspects likely to face serious charges including: Human trafficking, Unlawful detention, Child exploitation
Several teenage girls and newborns were rescued during the sting and are now receiving comprehensive medical treatment and psychological support under the care of the state.
Joining the Commissioner in the raid was Dr. Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu, Acting Director of Medical Services, and other senior health officials.
The Anambra State Government’s actions send a strong message: criminal networks operating under the guise of healthcare will be dismantled and prosecuted.
