President Tinubu Honors Bill Gates with CFR Award for Philanthropic Contributions to Nigeria
This award was given to him during a special ceremony at the State House in Abuja, where President Tinubu praised Gates for his longstanding contributions to public health, education, and economic development in Nigeria and across Africa through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
President Tinubu highlighted the Foundation's pivotal role in supporting Nigeria’s fight against polio, improving access to vaccines, strengthening healthcare infrastructure, and providing educational grants and technological empowerment programs. “This recognition is not merely ceremonial,” the President said. “It is a testament to the deep appreciation of the Nigerian people for your tireless commitment to improving lives and lifting communities out of poverty.”
Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and one of the world’s leading philanthropists, has been actively involved in developmental initiatives across Africa for over two decades. Through his foundation, Gates has worked closely with various Nigerian institutions and stakeholders to tackle some of the country’s most pressing health and development challenges.
In his acceptance remarks, Gates expressed gratitude for the honor and reaffirmed his commitment to continuing the Foundation’s work in Nigeria. “This recognition by the Federal Republic of Nigeria means a great deal to me and to everyone at the Foundation,” he said. “We are proud of the partnerships we have built here and are more determined than ever to support Nigeria’s journey toward a healthier, more equitable future.”
Gates also acknowledged the resilience of the Nigerian people and the country's youth population, describing them as “the true drivers of innovation and progress.”
The CFR title is one of Nigeria’s highest national honors, reserved for individuals—both citizens and non-citizens—who have made significant contributions to the nation's development or global humanitarian efforts. Previous recipients include heads of state, diplomats, and distinguished international figures.
The conferment of this honor on Bill Gates is widely seen as a diplomatic and symbolic gesture aimed at reinforcing Nigeria’s openness to global partnerships, especially in the areas of health, education, and technology.
The ceremony was attended by top government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, civil society leaders, and representatives of international development organizations.
