10-Year-Old Accidentally Shoots Police Inspector Father Dead with AK-47 in Awka

 


A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday evening as a 10‑year‑old boy accidentally shot and killed his father, Police Inspector Okolie Amechi, using the officer’s assigned AK‑47 rifle. The incident occurred at the family residence in Awka, the state capital.

According to the Anambra State Police Command, the young boy, unaware that the weapon was loaded, pulled the trigger while handling the rifle. The bullet struck Inspector Amechi in the back, and also hit his younger brother, Emmanuel, in the hand.

State Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed that the incident happened on June 15 at approximately 9:40 PM. Inspector Amechi was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead upon arrival. Emmanuel has been hospitalized and is responding positively to treatment.

In a statement, SP Ikenga expressed the police command's deep sorrow, noting: “The son, unaware of the state of the AK‑47 rifle assigned, pulled the trigger and struck the Inspector on the back and his second child on the hand.” The service rifle has since been recovered, and the decree has been deposited at the morgue. This tragic event has plunged the Anambra State Police Command into deep mourning, with sincere condolences extended to the family.
