Tragedy on Eko Bridge: Two Dispatch Riders Killed as Container Falls During Truck Collision
In a devastating incident on Sunday, two dispatch riders lost their lives when a 20-foot container fell off a truck during a collision involving two fully loaded Mack trucks on Eko Bridge, inward Alaka, Lagos.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the accident occurred when one of the articulated trucks, reportedly speeding and with the driver allegedly dozing off, lost control and collided with another truck. This collision led to the dislodgement of a 20-foot container, which subsequently crushed two dispatch riders navigating the bridge at the time.
The dispatch riders were identified by their vehicle registration numbers T-10357 LA and KJA 107 XM. Both victims were confirmed dead at the scene.
Emergency Response LASTMA officers monitoring traffic nearby responded swiftly, rescuing a severely injured truck driver who was transported to a hospital by a Lagos State Government ambulance. However, two other truck drivers reportedly fled the scene and are currently being sought by authorities.
Ongoing Concerns This incident adds to a series of fatal truck-related accidents in Lagos. Just last month, a truck carrying two large containers plunged off the Pen Cinema flyover bridge in Agege, landing on multiple vehicles below. Although LASTMA confirmed the incident, it did not immediately report casualties.
Safety Measures and Public Response The recurring nature of such accidents has raised concerns about road safety and the enforcement of traffic regulations in Lagos. Authorities are urged to implement stricter measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
