Princess Opeyemi Bright A 29-Year-Old British-Nigerian Becomes Youngest Civic Mayor in Barking and Dagenham

 

Councillor Princess Opeyemi Bright, a 29-year-old British-Nigerian, has made history by becoming the youngest Civic Mayor of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. Her appointment was confirmed during the council's Annual General Meeting on March 17, 2025, and she was officially inaugurated on May 16, 2025, for the 2025–2026 municipal year.

Born in the UK to Nigerian parents, Princess Bright is a Chartered Accountant and a member of the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA), having qualified in 2021. She began her professional career in investment banking before transitioning to the technology sector, where she worked as a senior strategy and operations manager for a major tech company. Her journey in public service commenced in 2018 when she was elected as the youngest Labour councillor in Barking and Dagenham at the age of 22. By 23, she had become the Chair of the Audit and Standards Committee, playing a pivotal role in promoting financial transparency and robust governance within the council.

Beyond her political career, Councillor Bright is deeply committed to community service and mentorship. She serves as a school governor, supporting youth education and development, and has been recognized with accolades such as the Universal Peace Federation’s Young Achiever Award and the Young Politician of the Year award at the Nigerian High Commission.

Her dedication to public service is inspired by her parents, Pastor Gbolahan Bright and Councillor Afolasade Bright, both of whom have held significant roles in UK public life. Her father, Pastor Bright, is a respected educator and spiritual leader who was awarded an MBE in 2015 for his contributions to education. Her mother, Councillor Afolasade Bright, currently serves as the Cabinet Member for Employment, Skills, and Aspiration in Barking and Dagenham and previously served as the mayor of the London Borough of Hackney from 2006 to 2007.

As Civic Mayor, Princess Bright will serve as the borough's first citizen, representing Barking and Dagenham at various ceremonial events and supporting local charities and community initiatives throughout her term.
