Nigerian Lawmakers Launch Probe into Deteriorating US Diplomatic Missions

 

The Nigerian House of Representatives has initiated an immediate investigation into the deteriorating conditions of the country's diplomatic missions in the United States. Lawmakers have described the state of these facilities as a "national embarrassment" and a "threat to Nigeria’s international image."

The House Committee on Foreign Affairs has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive assessment of the missions' operations, infrastructure, and service delivery. This decision follows reports of inadequate consular services, dilapidated facilities, and poor working conditions affecting both staff and Nigerian citizens abroad. The committee aims to identify the root causes of these issues and recommend actionable solutions to restore the integrity and functionality of Nigeria's foreign missions.

One of the critical concerns raised is the insufficient budget allocation for the maintenance and operation of Nigeria's 109 foreign missions. In January 2025, the House Committee on Foreign Affairs criticized the allocation of only ₦286 million for all missions, deeming it grossly inadequate to meet operational needs. Lawmakers argue that such underfunding hampers the ability of diplomatic missions to effectively represent Nigeria's interests and provide essential services to its citizens abroad.

The investigation also seeks to address the broader implications of these deficiencies on Nigeria's diplomatic relations and international standing. By scrutinizing the current state of foreign missions, the House aims to ensure that Nigeria's diplomatic presence abroad reflects the nation's commitment to excellence and its role in global affairs.
