Libya Arrests Five Nigerians for Alleged Theft of Electrical Equipment from Farm
Authorities in Libya have arrested five Nigerian nationals in connection with the alleged theft of electrical equipment from a private agricultural facility, according to local security sources.
The suspects were apprehended in a coordinated operation carried out by the Libyan police following reports of missing equipment from a farm located in the outskirts of Tripoli. Investigators say the stolen items include power cables, transformers, and other vital components essential to the farm's irrigation and energy systems.
“The suspects were caught in possession of several pieces of electrical equipment believed to have been removed from the farm without authorization,” a spokesperson for the Tripoli Security Directorate said. “We are conducting further investigations to determine the full extent of the operation and whether there are additional accomplices.”
Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the suspects, but confirmed that all five individuals are Nigerian citizens residing in Libya without proper documentation. The arrested individuals are currently being held pending further legal procedures.
The theft has raised concerns among local farmers, many of whom rely heavily on electric-powered systems for irrigation and crop management in the region’s arid climate. Officials have emphasized the need for tighter security in rural areas and increased oversight of undocumented foreign workers.
The Nigerian embassy in Tripoli has yet to issue a formal statement on the arrests.
