INEC Launches Artificial Intelligence Division to Modernize Electoral Process
In a significant move aimed at modernizing Nigeria’s electoral system, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the creation of a dedicated Artificial Intelligence (AI) Division. This newly established unit is part of the Commission’s strategic effort to enhance data-driven decision-making, improve risk detection and mitigation, and deepen the automation of voter services.
The development was revealed by INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, during a press briefing at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja. He emphasized that the adoption of AI technologies marks a forward-looking step in ensuring greater transparency, efficiency, and integrity in the country’s electoral processes.
“Our commitment to electoral reform and innovation remains firm. The creation of an Artificial Intelligence Division within INEC is a deliberate step to leverage emerging technologies to improve electoral operations, detect and mitigate risks early, and optimize voter engagement,” Professor Yakubu stated.
According to the Commission, the AI Division will focus on key areas including:
Predictive analytics for electoral risk mapping and crisis prevention
Automated voter registration and verification processes
Real-time data analysis during elections to support quick and accurate decision-making
Enhanced cybersecurity and misinformation monitoring across digital platforms
Professor Yakubu also noted that the AI Division will collaborate with technology experts, academic institutions, and global electoral bodies to develop ethical frameworks and implement best practices that align with Nigeria’s electoral laws.
“This is not just about technology adoption,” he added, “it is about institutional transformation to meet the expectations of Nigerians in a digital age.”
Stakeholders in the electoral and civic technology space have welcomed the move, calling it a timely intervention that could significantly improve voter trust and operational efficiency. Analysts note that, if well-implemented, the AI Division could play a vital role in the conduct of the upcoming off-cycle elections and the 2027 general elections.
INEC’s announcement places it among the few electoral bodies on the African continent actively integrating AI into core election management activities.
