Ebonyi Governor Increases Doctors’ Salaries to ₦500,000 in Health Sector Overhaul

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has announced a significant salary increase for newly employed medical doctors in the state’s primary healthcare facilities, raising their monthly pay to ₦500,000. The move is part of a comprehensive initiative aimed at revitalizing the healthcare system in the state.

The announcement was made during the launch of the state's Health Activation Programme, which also introduced a drug revolving fund and the distribution of advanced medical equipment to general hospitals across Ebonyi.

Governor Nwifuru revealed that over ₦10 billion has already been invested in upgrading healthcare infrastructure, purchasing essential medical equipment, and bolstering the state’s medical workforce.

To address the shortage of healthcare personnel, the government has recruited 195 new professionals, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and laboratory scientists. These new hires have been deployed to general hospitals to strengthen healthcare delivery and meet the growing needs of the population.

A key component of the health reform is the drug revolving fund, designed to ensure the uninterrupted availability of essential medicines in public hospitals. The fund is expected to promote sustainability, accountability, and transparency in drug supply and distribution.

In addition, the government has begun the rollout of modern medical equipment such as hospital beds, patient monitors, and other critical consumables to enhance service delivery in health facilities.

Governor Nwifuru reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving healthcare standards, emphasizing the importance of accountability and professionalism in the management of resources. He called on traditional leaders, civil society organizations, and the general public to actively monitor and protect the state’s healthcare investments.

The salary adjustment for medical doctors underscores the government’s resolve to attract and retain skilled professionals, and to improve the quality of care for residents across Ebonyi State.
