Cardinal Robert Prevost Becomes First American Pope, Taking the Name Leo XIV

 In a historic and unprecedented development, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, adopting the papal name Leo XIV. This marks the first time in the Church's two-millennia history that an American-born prelate has ascended to the papacy.

The papal conclave, convened following the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025, concluded after just 24 hours of deliberation. The 133 cardinal electors gathered in the Sistine Chapel, and on the fourth ballot, white smoke billowed from the chapel's chimney, signaling the election of a new pope. Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti announced the election of Cardinal Prevost to the thousands assembled in St. Peter's Square. 

Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Robert Prevost entered the Order of St. Augustine in 1977 and was ordained a priest in 1982. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Villanova University and later obtained a doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome.

Prevost's missionary work took him to Peru, where he served from 1985 to 1998 as a parish pastor, seminary teacher, and diocesan official. His deep commitment to the Peruvian Church led to his naturalization as a Peruvian citizen. In 2014, Pope Francis appointed him as the Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru. His leadership and dedication culminated in his appointment as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops in 2023, a role in which he oversaw the selection of bishops worldwide.

Pope Leo XIV is widely regarded as a centrist, balancing progressive social views with traditional doctrinal stances. He has been an advocate for marginalized communities, echoing Pope Francis's emphasis on inclusivity and compassion. However, he maintains conservative positions on certain doctrinal issues, such as the ordination of women as deacons.
