Armed Kidnappers Invade Abuja Estate, Hold Residents Hostage for Over an Hour
According to multiple eyewitnesses, the incident occurred between 12:00 midnight and 1:30 a.m. The assailants, who were said to be heavily armed, gained access to the estate under the cover of darkness and moved from house to house, instilling fear and panic among residents.
“They came in the middle of the night, shooting sporadically. We couldn’t call for help because we were all afraid. They moved freely through the estate as if they knew exactly where they were going,” said one resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to safety concerns.
Residents reported that the attackers held several families hostage and allegedly kidnapped an undisclosed number of individuals before fleeing the scene. The exact number of victims and the extent of injuries or casualties—if any—remain unclear at the time of reporting.
Security agencies were reportedly alerted but arrived after the kidnappers had already escaped. The delay in response has sparked renewed concern about the rising wave of insecurity in Abuja’s outskirts and the preparedness of law enforcement to respond swiftly to emergencies.
As of Monday morning, the FCT Police Command had yet to release an official statement on the incident. However, local vigilante groups and security operatives were seen patrolling the estate and surrounding areas in what appeared to be a search and rescue effort.
This incident adds to the growing list of recent attacks in the Federal Capital Territory, raising fresh questions about the effectiveness of security measures in residential estates and suburban communities.
Residents are calling on the government to take urgent steps to address the deteriorating security situation, including increasing police presence and surveillance in vulnerable areas.
