Nnamdi Kanu Appears in Court as Justice Omotosho Begins Fresh Trial on Terrorism Charges
On Tuesday, April 29, 2025, the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), resumed at the Federal High Court in Abuja under the supervision of Justice James Omotosho. This marks the commencement of a fresh trial following the reassignment of the case from Justice Binta Nyako, who recused herself in September 2024 after allegations of bias by the defense.
Kanu faces a seven-count charge encompassing terrorism and treasonable felony, to which he has pleaded not guilty. The charges stem from his alleged involvement in activities threatening Nigeria's sovereignty, including operating an unauthorized radio station to disseminate secessionist messages.
During the proceedings, Justice Omotosho granted an accelerated hearing, acknowledging the protracted nature of the case, which has spanned over a decade since Kanu's initial arrest in 2015 . The court scheduled subsequent trial dates for May 2 and May 6, 2025.
In a notable development, Kanu, through his lead counsel Kanu Agabi, SAN, tendered a formal apology to Justice Nyako and the prosecution counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, for previous courtroom outbursts. He expressed remorse for his conduct and pledged to maintain decorum throughout the trial.
Kanu's legal team has emphasized their commitment to a fair trial, while the prosecution prepares to present its first witness in the upcoming session . The trial's outcome is anticipated to have significant implications for Nigeria's legal and political landscape, particularly concerning issues of national unity and the handling of separatist movements.
As the trial progresses, stakeholders and observers alike remain attentive to the proceedings, which continue to evoke widespread interest and debate across the nation.
