Nigeria’s Finance Minister Wale Edun Leads Delegation at 2025 IMF Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C.
Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, is currently leading the country’s delegation at the 2025 Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, taking place in Washington, D.C. This high-level participation signals Nigeria’s commitment to advancing its economic reform agenda and strengthening strategic global partnerships.
Joined by the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr. Yemi Cardoso, Minister Edun has been actively engaging in discussions focused on enhancing economic growth, stability, and social protection frameworks. The meetings also reviewed progress on key initiatives under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform program.
A notable highlight was Minister Edun’s meeting with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. Their conversation centered on reinforcing Africa’s economic resilience in the face of global headwinds such as geopolitical instability and rising borrowing costs. Both sides underscored the need for policy actions that promote recovery and create fiscal space for development-driven investments.
In a strategic move to deepen financial collaboration, Minister Edun also held talks with the President of Afreximbank, Dr. Benedict Oramah. Discussions focused on support for Nigeria’s energy and trade sectors, including the $3 billion crude oil repayment loan with NNPC—a key instrument in the government’s efforts to stabilize the economy.
Additionally, Minister Edun delivered remarks at the Semafor World Economy Summit, where he highlighted Nigeria’s adoption of digital technologies to enhance governance efficiency and transparency. He outlined ambitious fiscal targets, including a projected revenue increase of over 60% this year, along with ongoing efforts to reduce the fiscal deficit and stabilize the naira.
Nigeria’s robust engagement at the IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings reflects a proactive approach to economic reform and a strong commitment to achieving sustainable development through global cooperation.
