The Federal Government has justified its recent decision to install solar panels at the Aso Rock Villa, citing the need for a more sustainable and cost-effective energy solution.
Speaking on the development, the Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mustapha Abdullahi, revealed that the Villa currently spends about ₦47 billion annually on electricity bills, a cost he described as unsustainable.
In response to this growing burden, President Bola Tinubu approved a ₦10 billion investment to establish a solar power grid for the presidential complex. According to Abdullahi, the solar installation will not only drastically reduce electricity costs but also promote clean, renewable energy in line with global climate goals.
"This initiative is a strategic move towards energy independence and fiscal responsibility," Abdullahi said. He emphasized that the project would serve as a model for government institutions nationwide to embrace renewable energy solutions.
The project, once completed, is expected to significantly cut the Villa’s reliance on the national grid and diesel generators, improving efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.
Work on the solar grid is expected to begin shortly, with completion projected within the next few months.
